Northbrook Sports Club

Located in Grayslake, IL

The Northbrook Sports Club was originally founded in 1947 in Northbrook IL. In 1987 they moved to their current location in Grayslake as primarily a Trap & Skeet club. With 640 acres to work with and the birth of Sporting Clays they soon added a 15-station clays course and a 5-stand.

I recently had an opportunity to shoot a round of clays with Roger Smith, an NSCA Certified Instructor and current NSC Sporting Clays Chairman. Roger explained to me that they really have two clays courses , a “Competition” clays course and a “Hunters” clays course.

We started shooting on the “Competition” course and I found the targets to be tough, almost FITASC tough, make that World FITASC tough. I personally like shooting tough targets and don’t mind getting beaten up. Even a couple of the master class shooters out there missed a few birds, so I didn’t feel too bad.

I know a lot of new shooters don’t want to come out and shoot a 35 and Northbrook obviously knows this too because their “Hunters” course is a little more reasonable and more in tune with what us mere mortals like to shoot. They even carried this theme over to their 5-stands where once again the have a “Competition” 5-stand and a “Hunters” 5-stand. Don’t think that either of the “Hunters” courses are “Skeet in the woods”. They’re both still challenging but were just a little more enjoyable to shoot.

In between rounds we had lunch in the spacious club house. With a full kitchen and plenty of seating it was a welcome break.

Even though they are a private club, Steve Davis the club’s Treasurer told me that their monthly registered shoots are open to the public. In fact on non event days if you are a member of any nationally recognized shooting organization like the NRA or the NSCA or any other private shooting club you can pay a small daily usage fee in addition to your target fees.

With monthly registered shoots and specialty events like the Ronald McDonald House Charity shoot and the Vintagers, there's plenty of opportunities to come out.

I found the course to be fun and challenging and the people to be really friendly. If you’re in the Chicagoland area, give them a try.
